SALT + EARTH Festival: Sara Trillo - In Search of Lost Chalk in Wye

A guided walk that will speculate on the holes in the landscape known locally as dene holes led by visual artist Sara Trillo. The walk will consider the lost ancient chalk workings of uncertain age around Wye and the importance of these as Widders Dump in the post-apocalyptic novel Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban.
This circular walk will last approximately three hours. Walking time at a moderate pace is approximately two hours and there will be regular stops so that the artist can talk about the sites.
Please note that there will be steep climbs in places as we ascend/descend the Downs. The path may also be slippery at points so please wear walking boots or sensible footwear. There are some stiles. There are cattle and sheep in some of the fields, so although dogs are welcome they will need to be on leads for much of the route.

Parking at Wye Football Pitches is very limited - alternative parking is at Wye Village Car Park: what3words skewing.requires.replaying
Turn out of Wye on Scotton Street. After the housing ends you will see Withersdane Lane on the right before Scotton Street becomes Coldharbour Lane. There is limited parking here but plenty of parking in Wye itself: the layby is a five minute walk from the village.
Sara Trillo is a visual artist exploring littoral spaces and ancient settlements impacted by water, making sculptural pieces incorporating physical material excavated from these sites. In the spirit of a pilgrimage, Sara leads walks, maps and shares histories and mythologies uncovered as part of her research
