Prospect Cottage

Following a successful campaign to save Prospect Cottage in 2020, Creative Folkestone has become the custodians of the iconic cottage and gardens. Derek Jarman’s former home and sanctuary will be preserved as a place to inspire future generations.

Our ambition is that Prospect Cottage remain a place that honours the legacy of Derek Jarman as so lovingly maintained by Keith Collins and inspires new creative endeavours and as such we do not intend that Prospect Cottage become a major tourist attraction, rather a place with limited public access that respects its vulnerability and the unique environment that surrounds it.

In the coming months, we will outline what the future of Prospect Cottage looks like and how it can remain a place that inspires artists, filmmakers, gardeners, and activists for many years to come. In the meantime, we are busy making sure that the cottage and contents within are carefully looked after.

After Jarman purchased Prospect Cottage in 1986, it quickly became a source of inspiration and a creative hub where his parallel artistic practices and collaborators came together. More than 25 years after his death, Prospect Cottage continues to be a site of pilgrimage for people from all over the world who come to be inspired by its stark beauty and by Jarman’s legacy.
