Anil Seth: Being You

Sorry, this event has sold out

Somehow, within each of our brains, billions of neurons work to create our conscious experience. How does this happen? Why do we experience life in the first person? ‘Being You – A New Science of Consciousness’ will challenge your understanding of perception and reality, and turn what you thought you knew about yourself on its head.

Anil Seth is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, where he is also Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science. He is Co-Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Program on Brain, Mind, and Consciousness, and of the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme: From Sensation and Perception to Awareness. He was recently made an Engagement Fellow with the Wellcome Trust.

'Being You: A New Science of Consciousness' is a Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller, a New Statesman Book of the Year, an Economist Book of the Year, a Bloomberg Business Book of the Year, a Guardian Book of the Week and a Guardian and Financial Times Science Book of the Year. His 2017 mainstage TED talk has had more than 13 million views and is one of TED’s most popular science talks.

The chairperson for this event will be Steven Gale.

“When the latest would be Einstein announces yet another theory, my eyes start to glaze over in anticipation of drivel and disappointment. Neuroscientist Anil Seth’s ‘Being You’ is the exception that proves the rule. If you only read one book about consciousness, it must be his.”
-Julian Baggini, The Wall Street Journal

“Beside my bed this week is Anil Seth’s ‘Being You’ — It is a brilliant book.”
-Claire Tomalin, New York Times
