Folkestone Reads: Modern Nature

Launching Autumn Reads we are delighted to present the world premiere of Folkestone Reads: Modern Nature. Starring performers gathered from across Folkestone, Hythe and the Romney Marsh, our film takes a closer look at Derek Jarman’s words.

We invited 21 people local to Folkestone, Hythe and the Romney Marsh to take part in a film project charting the 21 months spanned by the journal from January 1989 to September 1990. Encompassing themes from gardening and plants to art, film, sexuality, pandemic, illness, and death.

The resulting film, made by filmmaker Clare Unsworth, reframes the words of Derek Jarman within the contemporary landscape. The words spoken by the performers on screen demonstrate the enduring resonance of Jarman and why he is such an iconic figure to this day.
