Gender in our Primary Schools

“Girls can’t play football”
“Boys can’t sing”
“Girls can’t join the army”
These are statements made by six year olds at a Folkestone primary school this year.

Our guest speaker is Claire Harvey from the organisation Diversity Role Models, which works with kids in schools to embed empathy and inclusion. Diversity Role Models

This will be followed by a discussion led by Jo and Anna, who are local parents keen to explore what we can do to encourage a more nuanced view of gender in primary schools. What research has been done? What good practice exists? How could we influence our Folkestone primary schools to break down gender stereotypes?

Their hoped-for outcome from the session would be to form a sub-group of people interested in actively taking this issue forward locally. FWF events are usually women-only spaces (trans and NB inclusive) but for this one we invite people of all genders to join us.
