Beacons: The Gathering

Beacons: The Gathering

Gather with us on Sunny Sands beach, where we will reunite the Sea Gooseberries and send them back to the sea together as part of a magical participatory light installation woven with live song and a warming fire that harks back to the ancient community gatherings.

Bring a hot drink and join us around the fire!

Part quest, part performance – Beacons seeks to connect us to each other, our local landscape, and our place in the wider eco-system.

Two hundred ancient Sea Gooseberries have washed ashore from the past with an important message for us, but they’ve become separated in the storms and drift across the landscape leaving fragments of their songs in shops, cafes, parks and open spaces.

The Sea Gooseberries need us to join a quest to find their song fragments, piece together the puzzle, and reunite them once more – their magic can only work when they are together.

Beacons is created by Folkestone-based theatre maker and scenographer Alison Neighbour with composer Emily Peasgood, and creative technologist and game designer Tarim. Over the past nine months, Alison has been working with Sea Gooseberry Guardians from across Folkestone, Hythe & Romney Marsh to secure safe passage for the Sea Gooseberries.

Duration: 45 minutes

The project is devised by artist Alison Neighbour with music by composer Emily Peasgood. It is produced by SparkedEcho and Creative Folkestone.

Beacons is supported by Arts Council England, PRS Foundation, The Ashley Family Foundation, Folkestone Town Council and donations from individuals.
