Emergency on Planet Folkestone: Climate Change and Art

Sorry, this event has sold out

Join us for this urgent panel discussion to explore the role of art and the climate emergency.

Mike Stubbs’s artwork for Folkestone Triennial 2021, Climate Emergency Services, was designed to help us think about the causes of climate change and our relationship with fossil fuel powered machines. In this panel discussion, we will examine how art can create a platform for conversation. How can art inspire creative solutions and be a model for direct action? Our expert panel will discuss the threat of climate change to Folkestone and ask can we find hope in the crisis?

The panel will include artist Mike Stubbs, Climate Change Officer for Canterbury City Council Nicholas Thurston, and professor Charlotte Sleigh.

This event is part of the Folkestone Triennial public programme. Through conversation, we will expand our thinking about art, climate, and the future.

The panel:
Mike Stubbs worked with customised vehicles before he went to art school. His understanding of the emotional levers available to the motor industry is well developed. In respect to Climate Emergency Services, his emotional understanding underpins his response to the motor industry, in light of Extinction Rebellion and other manifestations of social concern.

Nicholas Thurston is an environmental engineer and an officer at Canterbury City Council. His expertise encompasses strategic programme design and management across the whole range of climate change issues.

Professor Charlotte Sleigh is a scholar and practitioner in science humanities, based at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, UCL. She is an expert in artscience intersections and the author of several books, including The Paper Zoo: 500 Years of Animals in Art and Science (2016) and Human (2020). Professor Charlotte Sleigh is also the current president of the British Society for the History of Science.
