Sorry, this event has sold out

Inspired by Wells’ The Time Machine, we travel back in time in this year's Strange Concords: Words and Music Time Machine Events to alight on seminal artistic creations that once shaped our cultural future.

Join Lucasta Miller for an insight discussion on Jean Rhys and Charlotte Brontë, and what inspired the Book Festival curators to bring together their words in surprising, but exciting, musical conjunctions.

This event takes place at Lympne Castle, The Street, Lympne, Hythe, CT21 4LQ

Free to attend, booking essential. You may arrive from 1pm to view the castle and grounds beforehand.

1966 - Caribbean & England takes place on Sunday 17 November at 3pm and 8pm at Lympne Castle. Excerpts of Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea are read by Imogen Stubbs and Alex Jennings: Ruby Philogene MBE sings black spirituals and a DJ will mix music mentioned in the novel with sounds from the year of its publication, 1966.

Event chaired by Andy Miller.
