Joanna Moorhead & Jennifer Higgie: Art on the Edge

What draws so many female artists – historical and contemporary – to spiritualism, dreams and alternative belief systems?

Overlooked by (male) art historians for decades, artists’ explorations of spiritual and mythical realms are now being recognised as important challenges to the universal ideal of the ‘Man of Reason’, with the last Venice Biennale titled The Milk of Dreams after a story by legendary Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington.

To discuss their part in this reappraisal of the otherworldly are Joanna Moorhead, Carrington’s cousin and author of new biography Surreal Spaces: The Life and Art of Leonora Carrington; and Jennifer Higgie, former Frieze magazine editor and author of The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World.

Folkestone Book Festival is our annual celebration of books, ideas, reading and writing in its many magical forms. This year's festival has been curated by Jen Thatcher and James Harkin. Curating the festival for the first time, Jen and James have been inspired by Folkestone and how we can all come together through inspired discussion about global ideas, global thinking and possible futures.

This year's festival is for everyone and we want to make it possible for more people than ever before to be able to come together and enjoy a packed festival.
