The Oxford Chamber Music Festival Quartet: Music in the Dark of Night
Sorry, this event has sold out
Marcel Proust was a regular concertgoer, and his interest in music was intense and highly intelligent; his fictional composer Vinteuil of ‘In Search of Lost Time’ attests to that. In the winter of 1916 Proust called late in the evening at the home of Gaston Poulet, the leader of the Poulet Quartet, and requested the quartet come that night to his apartment in the Boulevard Haussmann and perform Cesar Franck’s String Quartet in D major for him. The four musicians arrived at around 1am and performed the Franck twice for Proust.
The curator of the Oxford Chamber Music Festival, Priya Mitchell, is bringing together a quartet of musicians specially for the festival to perform Cesar Franck’s String Quartet in D major and in a gesture to that late night performance in Proust’s apartment the festival is creating a unique opportunity for audience members to recline or lie down in the Quarterhouse while they listen to the music! Bring a yoga mat, blanket or sleeping bag - whatever you need to make yourself comfortable.
Priya Mitchell has performed with, amongst others, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. As a recitalist and chamber musician she has performed extensively at international music festivals across the world. She has been artistic director of the Oxford Chamber Music Festival since 2000.
