Threads Micro-residency Project Call Out!

Are you an artist in need of time and space to work? Nomadic artist-led gallery, Threads, have teamed up with six partners across East Kent to produce a nine-month, paid project and they want you to be a part of it!

Having delivered over thirty visual art critiques across Kent, Threads have identified the opportunity for development that exists in peer-to-peer activity. In answer to this, Threads have curated a nine-month, paid programme of public residencies, critiques and salons, supported by local cultural ambassadors. By keeping every event open to the public, the project offers a uniquely different cultural experience for visitors, highlighting East Kent as a must-visit destination for contemporary art.

This is an open call to enthusiastic artists, who are keen to experiment with their practice, to participate in a four- or one-day public residency, or salon event. Thirty-six chosen artists participating in residencies will create work at a partner location, including: Sidney Cooper Gallery (Canterbury); UCA Brewery Tap (Folkestone); Ideas Test (Sittingbourne); Dover Studio Collective; and Dover Big Local Hub/Art 31 Gallery.

A further twelve chosen artists will participate in salon events at Turner Contemporary (Margate), to present and discuss their work to a public audience and panel of experienced creatives. These events will provide the opportunity for feedback and guidance from advisors across the region, helping to extend artists’ professional development.

True to Threads’ ethos of a firm belief in contributing to a more sustainable economy for artistic communities, all artists involved in the project will receive payment for their participation – £800 for four-day residencies; £200 for one-day residencies; and £50 for salons. This open call is not limited to experienced artists – Threads actively encourage applications from those in the early stages of their career, who struggle to find time and space to produce new work.

To participate in Threads’ micro-residency project, running until  November 2018, apply for the open call by 12pm on Sunday 11 March at www.threadskent.com/call-out.
