Leading arts charity Creative Folkestone has announced today that Alastair Upton will step down as Chief Executive in July 2026, after 14 successful years in the role.
Having overseen this summer's critically acclaimed Folkestone Triennial, a successful autumn Book Festival, and the launch of the Folkestone Is A Library project, Alastair will be leaving Creative Folkestone in a strong position to build on its role as an innovative, ambitious arts organisation and catalyst for the town's transformation.
During his tenure, Alastair has played a central role in shaping Folkestone’s cultural landscape. Under his leadership, Creative Folkestone has delivered four acclaimed Triennials and is now designated as an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation—recognition of its sustained excellence and contribution to the arts. His vision and commitment has established Creative Folkestone as a producer of internationally renowned arts and culture and provided a catalyst for creativity and across the town’s communities, artists, makers and businesses. Saving Prospect Cottage, Derek Jarman’s home at Dungeness, and establishing a programme of residencies and public visits will be of lasting value for the country’s heritage.
Reflecting on his decision, Alastair Upton said: “It has been an extraordinary privilege to lead Creative Folkestone over the past 14 years. I’m incredibly proud of what the charity, its trustees, staff and supporters have achieved, bringing world-class art to the Kent coast, supporting local talent and demonstrating how creativity can connect communities. With the 2025 Triennial marking a real high point, it feels like the right time to hand over next summer to new leadership to guide Creative Folkestone into its next chapter.”

The Creative Folkestone Board will begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive in the coming months.
