Applications for Prospect Cottage Residencies 2027-28 are now closed.
As custodians of Prospect Cottage, Creative Folkestone is proud to continue supporting the life of this remarkable place. Not a fixed monument, but a living space for thought, reflection and creative practice, embodied through the residency programme inviting people to encounter the cottage, its landscape, garden and histories, and to find space for new ways of thinking and making.
Residencies take place between 2027 and 2028 and are open to both local and international applicants. These two-week residencies offer time and space to develop work without the pressure to produce a finished outcome. Applicants are invited to reflect on why this concentrated period at Prospect Cottage would be especially valuable to them, with a focus on the present and future rather than past achievements.
The programme is particularly suited to those who will respond to the solitude of Prospect Cottage, the life and work of Derek Jarman, and the distinctive landscape of Dungeness. Residents should be comfortable with self-sufficiency and aware of the cottage’s unique setting: remote, beautiful, exposed and, at times, challenging. While Prospect Cottage offers seclusion, its garden remains a place of pilgrimage, and visitors may be present outside during a stay.
There will be four paid two-week residencies available each year, with residents receiving £500 per week after their stay. Residents are not expected to produce a formal outcome, though they will be asked to leave a brief written, visual or verbal reflection for the archive.
Please note that the residencies are not open to students, and Prospect Cottage has accessibility constraints due to the historic building and shingle environment.
